Who is Shumi Kupara?

Shumi and family

What is your background?

I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, which was absolutely amazing! I credit a lot of who I am to most of what I experienced growing up in such a beautiful country. I studied Media and Law at the University of Cape Town and worked in Cape Town , so I have come to call the ‘Mother City’ home. I have worked in both Zimbabwe and South Africa, specialising in Human Rights Literacy. My passion for justice led me to a career change from being a lawyer to a theologian, and I now live in Oxford with my husband and our two daughters.

Why did you join DECIBEL?

After studying theology in Oxford, I wanted to work in an organisation in the city where I was able to continue working in theology using my writing, communication and literacy skills. DECIBEL offered an exciting opportunity for me to do just that. I was particularly drawn to the work with countries on the African continent and the use of mixed media in multiple languages, to deliver inductive educational lessons. Having experience with course design and facilitation for legal literacy, the transition to theological education for marginalised groups was providential.

What are your current responsibilities within DECIBEL?

I work in the Content and Production department, as a Course Designer.

What are you dreaming about for the future?

I’m dreaming of bite-sized, challenging, but easy to understand, theological content that is relevant, transcultural, transgenerational, and transformative!
