Who is Andrew Westerman?

What is your background?
I am British and based in the Northeast of the UK in a city called Durham. After university I trained to be a teacher but after being head teacher in a couple of schools, I left teaching to work on multi-agency projects supporting vulnerable families.

This led to work overseas in India, West Africa, and the Middle East. I lived with my wife for six years in Dubai where I worked throughout the Middle East as a consultant on inclusion. Now I’m now back in the UK (mostly) and retired (pretty much) but still work on several projects.

Why did you initially join DECIBEL?
I have been involved over many years on projects with the board chairman Martin Charlesworth, firstly Jubilee+ which supported churches to develop their work in social justice and community action, and then on the development of Word Online, an amazing resource which is part of the DECIBEL offering (see separate presentation).

What are your current responsibilities within DECIBEL?

I serve as one of the trustees for DECIBEL, with a special interest in the educational work.

What are you dreaming about for the future?

I believe that as the result of the work of DECIBEL we will see church leaders trained and equipped to feed their flocks with good teaching and providing excellent pastoral care.

But the technological developments are also full of exciting possibilities that could be used to reach people in challenging and remote places with advice on healthcare, diet, agricultural practices, and so much more.

There really is so much potential and I feel privileged to be involved in something that could impact lives for the better across the globe.
