What is your background?

My undergraduate studies were in Chinese. Studying this was extremely rewarding, both academically and personally. After having graduated, I spent time in Japan teaching English and interning for a church. This time both confirmed a love of ministry that had been nascent for several years, and a desire to continue in academia, which I realised I missed dearly. However, throughout my time in Japan, I began to passively develop some research ideas of my own, which stemmed from my personal observations of churchmanship. I noted the internal experience of charismatic prayer, and its similarity to that of contemplative prayer. However, I was struck by some of the outward differences between the two traditions. The unravelling of my presumed theology brought me here to Oxford, where I am currently attempting to collate a cohesive understanding of experiential prayer. I am passionate about prayer as a way of presenting oneself before God, in total honesty, with the simple intention of knowing Him and becoming more like Him. I believe this is the best approach to prayer – for all people, at all times, in all places.

Why did you join DECIBEL?

I believe the best way to disciple others is simply to remain attentive and responsive. Remain attentive to the Spirit, and remain attentive to people. Then, once we have truly understood the hearts of those around us, we are able to respond precisely where there is need. Where it has been determined with accuracy that people seek resources, resources ought to be given. And DECIBEL is doing just that.

Furthermore, I am deeply passionate about theological education as a means of spiritual formation. Theology is not a substitute for truly knowing Jesus, but it provides a ‘roadmap’ by which to discern our experiences of Him and of everything else. I do not believe one indwelt by the Spirit can learn about Jesus without desiring to become more like Him. And ultimately, isn’t that what this is all for?

What are your current responsibilities within DECIBEL?

I am currently working on the administrative side of TheWell. I help to upload content into the Cloud, and make sure everything is in its right place.

What are you dreaming about for the future?

I am dreaming about accessible theological education for deep spiritual formation. Learning about Jesus is the greatest gift, and one which will transform lives far beyond anything we could hope for. I long to see people not only accept Jesus, but become the most Christlike, flourishing versions of themselves.
